So Maybe European Basketball Isn’t All That Great After All

KempAccording to ESPN.com, Shawn Kemp, yes Shawn Kemp, has signed a contract to play with a club in the top Italian league, Premiata Montegranaro. Kemp is forty years old, he’s got like seven kids, and hasn’t played ball professionally since the 2002-2003 season when he was only nominally on the Orlando Magic. Premiata features former Clemson star Sharrod Ford and two other Americans and was the home of Randolph Childress through last season.

Of course, if Premiata Montegranaro can capture the Kemp who was so dominant in the NBA in the early-mid 90s, they’ll have made quite a steal. But having had weight issues, legal issues and attitude issues for most of the past eight years, he isn’t very likely to be the player they think they’re getting. Granted, they say he’s been working out and that he’s in very good shape, so I guess we’ll see. But these European domestic leagues have lost some credibility in my eyes with this signing.

Good to see the Shawn Kemp Comeback Tour has gone international. Still got the poster up?
This is an MLS type signing for Euro basketball. Maybe even below that quality.
