Spurs lost their home opener at White Hart Lane to Sunderland today, 2-1. Kieran Richardson and Djibril Cisse scored for the Black Cats, the latter in the eighty-second minute to break the tie forged by Jermaine Jenas’ seventy-third minute strike. Perhaps Spurs are just trying to take baby steps. They did score a goal of their own this week, after last week’s goal came on a ninetieth minute own goal at the Riverside.
The questions surrounding Dimitar Berbatov remain as the striker did not even see the field this week. I continue to argue that if he is not sold yet that he should be on the pitch to help in whatever ways he can. Getting twenty-five minutes in the second half last week and nothing today is completely inexcusable. Juande Ramos needs to get him on the pitch or get him out of London.
The defense again let the team down in allowing the two home goals. Ledley King was even back this week, so the excuses are going to be hard to come by. It is simply a disastrous start to the season, much as last year started so poorly. You cannot expect to place even in the top half of the table after losing several games early on. The deficit will be too large to make up. And at this point, Tottenham sit squarely on the very bottom of the league.
