Blackburn Escape Relegation

Perhaps it will not last for the rest of the season but Blackburn Rovers earned their way out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage in a make-up game. Clint Dempsey gave the Cottagers an instant lead with his left-footed goal in the 2nd minute. For most of the rest of the match, Fulham kept Blackburn just enough off the mark to preserve their lead. But in the 69th minute, El Hadji Diouf and his bizarre-as-always hair-do equalized. Not to be outdone, Jason Roberts (pictured) sent home the winner for Rovers in the 85th minute.

For the moment, Blackburn are in fifteenth place, two points clear of relegation. Of course Portsmouth and Man United are still a match behind due to the Carling Cup final a few weeks ago, so it is possible that Pompey could just back out. But unlikely considering their opponent and now Stoke and Newcastle also find themselves below Rovers. As for Fulham, the Cottagers miss yet another opportunity to make up ground on their rivals near the middle-table mark. Still in tenth, Fulham missed a shot at eighth place with a win or at least ninth with a draw.

The Premiership returns in full force this weekend after the mid-week European ties for many of the clubs.
