Rangers crashed out of Europe today, really before they could even get started. Playing a Champions League qualifier in Lithuania, ‘Gers could not hold a 1-0 first half lead, losing 2-1 to FBK Kaunas. The game was decided on a Linas Pilibaitis (formerly of Hearts, no less) goal in the 87th minute, sending the Scottish side home in the third round of qualifying.
This is almost unimaginable as Rangers reached the UEFA Cup Final last season before losing to Andrei Arshavin and Zenit St. Petersburg. A regular in the Champions League, this loss is a new low for Rangers and Scottish football in general. The game was played at the Lithuanian national side’s home field in Kaunas, one that holds only 8500.
Rangers supporters are already calling the Glasgow side a disgrace and probably many other nasty words. And who can blame them as their club has crashed out of Europe before the SPL season has even begun!
